There was a man who died and was waiting at the Pearly Gates for permission to enter Heaven.  He was told that before he could enter, he would have to face a trial.  Upon seeing the one who would be passing judgement on him, the man fell to his knees, trembling and weeping in fright and shame.  In front of him stood his old dog.  This man knew that on earth he was not kind to his dog.  Many a night he had sat by a warm fire after a hearty meal while his dog shivered out in the cold with little or nothing to eat.  Then, when he had no more use for his dog, the man drove him out into the country and left him to fend for himself, rationalizing that someone would take him in.  He never knew or cared that his dog had suffered and finally died all alone in a ditch.  Now this man had to face the truth of his actions as his dog, now young and made whole again, approached him.
To his amazement, the dog came and licked his hand.

For such is the nature of a dog.  His love and devotion are unconditional and timeless, whether we are deserving of it or not.
